1950 WILLYS CJ3A
This classic vehicle was built in 1950 and registered as its original name Willys CJ3A. It has been restored respecting the original Willys MB model, which was built in 1944, by Gazi University Lecturer Ogan Kırsaçlıoğlu, perfectly reflecting the days it was made in. Willys MB came out of the restoration of a scrap Willys which was made in 1950. Starting in May 2014, the restoration continued until November 2015. Willys MB preserved its originality during the restoration thanks to the delicate work performed by the owner of the vehicle.
Wars gave rise to the emergence of many different car classes. The best example in this regard is the Willys MB model, which was awarded the title of "War Winning Vehicle". Produced a total of 361,000 units during the Second World War, it is the ancestor of all of today's SUV models. It can be shown among the “Five most important models that shaped the history of automobiles”. The origin of the name, Jeep, is quite interesting. During the Second World War, Willys was called by the American soldiers with the name "Eugene, the Jeep", a mysterious animal owned by the cartoon character Popeye. “Eugene, the Jeep” is a very capable animal that can climb and get anywhere. Soldiers began to shorten this name as Jeep over time, as Willys MB vehicles resembled Eugene the Jeep. Therefore, in 1950, the name of the brand was registered as "Jeep". The brand is currently operating under the FCA (Fiat-Chrysler) group, and its’ grille design has not changed for 75 years.
CJ3A serial numbered 1950 Willys Jeep, was brought to M.S.Ö Air & Space Museum with the contributions of Hamdiye and Şaban Eyüboğlu in November 2021.
