1950 WILLYS CJ3A

This classic vehicle was built in 1950 and registered as its original name Willys CJ3A. It has been restored respecting the original Willys MB model, which was built in 1944, by Gazi University Lecturer Ogan Kırsaçlıoğlu, perfectly reflecting the days it was made in. Willys MB came out of the restoration of a scrap Willys which was made in 1950. Starting in May 2014, the restoration continued until November 2015. Willys MB preserved its originality during the restoration thanks to the delicate work performed by the owner of the vehicle.

Wars have led to the emergence of many different automobile classes. The best example of this is the Willys MB model, which earned the title of the “Vehicle That Won the War.” A total of 361,000 units were produced during World War II, and this vehicle is considered the ancestor of all modern SUV models. It can be listed among the “Top 5 Most Influential Models in Automotive History.” The origin of the name “Jeep” is also quite interesting. During World War II, American soldiers began calling the Willys MB “Eugene the Jeep,” after a mysterious animal character in the Popeye cartoon series. “Eugene the Jeep” could go anywhere, climb anything, and was highly capable. Because soldiers found the Willys MB vehicles similar to Eugene the Jeep, they began shortening the name to simply “Jeep.” Subsequently, in 1950, the brand name “Jeep” was officially registered. Today, the brand operates under the FCA (Fiat-Chrysler) group, and its grille design has remained unchanged for 75 years.

CJ3A serial numbered 1950 Willys Jeep, was brought to M.S.Ö Air & Space Museum with the contributions of Hamdiye and Şaban Eyüboğlu in November 2021.
